Venerable Father Rod (Sua) was known by many streams. First, the reason why people called him Venerable Father Rod (Sua), as his name was Rod but he was fierce like a tiger. Another stream told that he was escaped from a tiger. Formerly, Venerable Father Rod (Sua) lived in Wat Bang Wa Yai or Wat Rakhang Thonburi. After that, before moving to Wat Pradoo, he moored a boat to stay a night at Ban Suakham. The villagers asked him to move the boat to another place as they were afraid of a tiger to across the canal. But he did not move the boat so the villagers just left from him. On the way back home, the villagers talked about going back there again on tomorrow morning. They said that if he was not eaten by the tiger, he might be a great master monk. If he died, they would take his corpse to burn. In the morning of the next day, they found him sitting in the boat and laughing happily. Therefore, people called him as Venerable Father Rod (Sua). Then, it was assumed that when Ayutthaya Kingdom collapsed, many temples including inside and outside the city were abandoned as many monks had to escape from Burmese enemies like other villagers. Even the monks were not killed by the enemies, they were famished. People were seeking to survive including Father Rod. He escaped from Wat Pradoo to Wat Rakhang or Wat Bang Wa Yai for a while until the Rattanakosin era. Then he moved back to wat Pradoo again and restored Wat Rongtham which was located nearby and from then on called as Wat Pradoorongtham. Father Rod was the first abbot of the temple since the King Rama I from the evidence of Kwamsongjam, which was a thesis of the Prince Damrong Rajanubhab. |
